What is urea?

Urea with the chemical formula CH4N2O (also known as Carbamide) is considered as a very popular and well-known chemical compound. It has great importance in the human body and numerous applications in different industries, especially in agriculture. The pure shape of this chemical compound at room temperature is in the form of crystal or white powders. It doesn’t have an inhalable odor, although its resulting ammonia in the presence of water (which also includes water vapor) has a sharp smell. It is neither acidic nor alkaline; it is highly soluble in water and alcohol, and relatively non-toxic. Its molecular mass and melting point are 60.056 g and 132.7 °C, respectively.

Applications

Agriculture industries

More than 90% of the whole urea produced in the world is used for agriculture. Urea is widely used in chemical fertilizers as a rich and suitable nitrogen source. Because nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are more effective than other known elements in plants growth. Ammonia and carbon dioxide are produced in the soil by adding urea fertilizer to the soil. The produced ammonia is converted to nitrate by soil bacteria which is easily absorbed by plants. It can be said that urea fertilizers are very welcome in the market of agricultural products because of their great impact on plants growth.

Urea high solubility in water is a property that can be used in the generation of mixed fertilizers. For one hectare of agricultural land, on average 40- 300 Kg from this fertilizer is suitable and its exact amount depends on the type of soil and desired product. The fertilization method with urea fertilizers is performed with both dry and in solution in the agricultural lands’ irrigation. It is also recommended that urea be stored, as well as many other solid fertilizers, in a cool and dry place with proper ventilation. Because urea fertilizer storage in the wet places causes the coagulation of urea fertilizer as well as the chemical effects.

Chemical industries

Urea is an important raw material to produce highly used chemical compounds like:

  • Different types of plastic especially urea-formaldehyde resins
  • Types of glue such as urea-formaldehyde and urea-melamine-formaldehyde which are used in making water plywood board
  • Potassium cyanate as a raw material in some industries
  • Pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries
  • Animal feed and preparation of fire-fighting powders

Different types of urea:

Urea exists in the spherical granule and prilled models in the agricultural sector. The most difference between these two types is in the dimensions and size of urea fertilizer.

Usually, the grains size in prilled fertilizer is between 1 up to 2.4 mm and granular is between 2 up to 4 mm.

It should be noted that the nitrogen content of both granular and prilled models is 46%.
